Time to strengthen EQ-prone buildings may be shorter than you think
Updated: Apr 30, 2019
Back in 2016, at the Building & Construction Conference, we flagged that the long timeframe to strengthen buildings might not apply for a lot of New Zealand. Buildings have traditionally been built along the main (or only) road in and out throughout New Zealand. The Building (Earthquake-prone Buildings) Amendment Act 2016 always contemplated that buildings on key routes would need to be strengthened earlier. It seems that Wellington City Council is now realising this issue: https://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/news/wellington/111977788/time-to-seismically-strengthen-wellington-buildings-on-key-escape-routes-halved?cid=app-iPhone&fbclid=IwAR3qHaRqThTsSBP6m2kaY-XSgqIPtlHb-0vRVY-XFqhZ6ZdLba38zQqWzhY
